Meals On Wheels 40th anniversary event set Oct. 1

Posted: Updated:

(TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - Meals On Wheels Ministry of East Texas will celebrate its 40th anniversary on Oct. 1.

"The need was so evident, and people like to help other people," Richard Ziglar, founding director, said. "The community was so pleased to help the elderly population in particular. … I'm so pleased it's grown and had the volunteers and support. Without volunteers, it couldn't function. It has expanded more than we could have imagined."

The 40th Anniversary Celebration Banquet will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the CrossWalk Conference Center at Green Acres Baptist Church, at 1607 Troup Highway.

"Our annual banquet raises critical funding that goes directly to pay for hot, home-delivered meals for our more than 3,200 homebound senior and disabled clients across our six-county service area," Meals on Wheels Ministry President and CEO Mike Powell said in a written release. "This year, we are especially proud to celebrate 40 years of service to our community, during which time we have served more than 15 million meals to our neighbors in need."

The event will include buffet lunch, silent auction, live music and a program featuring author, former pastor and former Dean of George W. Truett Theological Seminary, Dr. Paul Powell.

The 2013 Meals on Wheels Volunteer of the Year also will be recognized during the event. This year's winner is Evelyn Ford, who has been volunteering for almost 20 years.

"I think it's a good program," she said. "(The clients) know that each day, someone will come see them."

Ms. Ford does a host of important jobs for the organization — she calls volunteers, orders meals, writes reports and also delivers meals.

"I've been through some muddy roads and potholes," she said with a laugh.
