Winona school district in the dark after a tree falls onto a power line

Posted: Updated:

(KYTX) - A major power outage in Winona leaves the entire school district in the dark causing kids to be sent home early.

Around 9 this morning  power went out at every campus and some homes.

Since SWEPCO told the district it would be hours until it was restored, the school shut down at noon.

No power made mealtime challenging, but the district did its best to feed kids before they left.

"We don't want to send them on a bus at noon not having eaten anything since breakfast, so we got with our cafeteria staff and they said hey we have cheese sticks, fruit and some crackers so we ran everybody through and gave them a chance to eat before we put them back on the bus," says Denise Shetter, Winona ISD Superintendent

SWEPCO tells us a contractor working on road construction off 155 just South of Big Sandy, hit some trees that fell into a power line.

Power is back as of this afternoon and Winona schools will re-open tomorrow.
