No compromise, Government shuts down

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - The federal budget expired at midnight and Congress failed to reach a deal on a new budget creating a partial shutdown of the government.

Neither side would compromise on the Affordable Care Act, which the house linked to a new budget deal.

House Republicans were hoping to weaken or defund "Obamacare", Democrats demanded a clean bill focused only on funding the government.

More than 800,000 federal workers will be told to go home from work today and will not be paid during the shutdown.

"We'll have to look into using our savings account, whatever is there. We'll have to look about maybe putting off a mortgage payment," said U.S. Coast Guard Civilian Employee, Cindy Blythe.

In previous shutdowns, pay for service members was withheld until the shutdown was worked out.

Congress did agree on one thing, the President signed a bill into law that will mean members of the military will be paid throughout the shutdown.

The shutdown also means national parks and museums won't open for business until Congress can reach a deal on a budget.
