Smith County receives $100,000 for indigent defense

Posted: Updated:

(KYTX)- The Smith County Commissioners Court announced today that the County has received more than $100,000 after applying for a state grant to supplement the rising costs of indigent defense.

The Smith County Commissioners Court thanked the Auditor's Office today, for applying for funds through the Texas Indigent Defense Commission (TIDC) after a costly trial in fiscal year 2013. Smith County is one of just five counties in the state of Texas to receive reimbursement funds for indigent defense.

"Indigent defense is a required function of county government and we are very excited to receive additional funds to support the rising costs of this mandate;" County Judge Joel Baker said.

TIDC awarded a total of $628,108 to Austin County, Dimmit County, Kleberg County, Smith County, and Willacy County for extraordinary indigent defense expenditures in a case or series of cases. To be eligible for extraordinary grant awards, counties must demonstrate the extraordinary nature of the case or series of cases and direct litigation costs for indigent defense services are the only allowable expenditures.
