East Texas mom trades cupcakes for weights and a healthier diet

TYLER (KYTX) - Fitting back into pre-pregnancy clothes is a major milestone for many new moms. Research shows that a regular exercise program, started soon after you have the baby, but not before doctor's orders is good for your overall health.

Casey Simpson had a love affair with cupcakes while she was pregnant. She says that craving didn't fade once the baby came home. After a year of being a new mom, she decided it was time to call in the experts.

Sometimes the joys of motherhood, come with the burden of baby weight. "I was very disappointed when I came home from the hospital and I was less than 10 pounds from the weight I went into the hospital.  That was a big distraction for me getting back into shape," says Casey Simpson.

Casey was overwhelmed with the extra pounds. "I went to put on clothes and I was uncomfortable and I refused to buy a bigger size. I was wearing the clothes I had worn while I was pregnant," says Casey.

She  enlisted a trainer at 360 fitness in Tyler to guide her to a leaner, stronger body. "The trainers aren't always going to tell you what you want to hear. They are going to go over your diet. Those things that you don't want to hear you don't need to eat, they are going to tell you to cut them out," says Casey.

Casey traded her cupcakes for twice weekly training sessions with cardio and healthier diet, filled with protein shakes, lean protein, fruits and veggies.

"You can just do so much more throughout the day whenever you feel better about yourself and you have that energy," says Casey.

Now, exercise is an appointment the busy mom keeps for herself and her family. For all you moms who are wondering, Casey doesn't deprive herself to get that toned figure.

In addition to eating a lean breakfast, lunch and dinner, she also munches on 2 healthy snacks like low fat Greek yogurt or small portion of nuts during the day.

Just remember, taking off the baby weight begins with baby steps. Harvard researchers say new moms, who walked 30 minutes a day had a 34% lower chance of retaining 11 pounds or more at their baby's first birthday.
