MINEOLA (KYTX) - A man is dead after a small, ultra light, plane crashed this morning.

A witness tells us the man took off at Wisener Airport Thursday morning, only to have some trouble.

He says he's not sure if the wind had anything to do with it because he couldn't tell what direction it was coming from.

Still no answer as to what exactly caused this small, ultra light aircraft to crash, killing the pilot.

You can see what's left of the plane in these pictures.

"From what I understand, gone through the trees and that's what resulted in unexpected condition, hit the ground harder," says Robert Wisener, the Assistant Manager at the family owned airport.

About 60 aircraft are kept here.

One, this small ultra light that the Wood County Sheriff's Office says 46-year-old Dwayne Hawkins took up to fly.

DPS says he's from White Oak.

"I did know him for years now. Had a similar plane before so he's had one and know him to fly such things. Kind of surprising, frankly," says Wisener.

A man at the crash scene told us Hawkins was trying to buy the fabric winged, open-air plane from him.

That man told us he saw Hawkins take off, have trouble, and crash.

He wouldn't talk to us on camera because he was still upset, he attempted to pull Hawkins out and says he wouldn't respond.

It was upsetting for everyone along the runway.

"He's been here for sometime, he's flown similar aircraft before," says Wisener.

Wisener says Hawkins had about 20 years of experience flying.

"More similar to a hang glider with a small engine. Of course have an undercarriage with landing gear, but not enclosed cockpit like more conventional type of aircraft," says Wisener.

But one thing no one's sure of, what took the small plane to the ground.

The Wisener family says the airport has been open for nearly 100 years and they don't remember there ever being a crash that lead to a death here.

The Wood County Sheriff's Office says Hawkins died at the crash site.

The Department of Public Safety says the investigation will be turned over to the Federal Aviation Administration to determine what caused the crash.
