Laura Bush unveils new children's book in Tyler

Tyler (KYTX) -- Former First Lady Laura Bush was in East Texas today to promote literacy and the launch of a new children's book.

Mrs. Bush, known for her dedication to literacy and advancing education, continues that work today.

"What an honor to have her here. I could not think of anyone better to come and be the official first reader of this book," Denise Bardsley, a Junior League of Tyler book committee member, said.

The former First Lady spoke to a crowd of 550 people at the CrossWalk Conference Center in Tyler.

Then she did what she enjoys.

"I don't think there was a dry eye of any of the committee members while she was reading it," Carrie Bigbie, another Junior League of Tyler book committee member, said.

Mrs. Bush read the Junior League's new book "Goodnight Rose City" to 20 students hand-picked from several schools in Smith County. It features trademarks in Tyler like the Azalea District, Rose Festival, and Caldwell Zoo.

"We got a group together that helped decide what makes Tyler famous, and what makes it a great place to live and visit," Bigbie said.

All proceeds from "Goodnight Rose City" go to fund agencies that the Junior League of Tyler helps support.

Mrs. Bush is a former Junior League member herself. As a gift, the Tyler chapter gave her a copy of the book to read to her new granddaughter, Mila Hager, born in April to Jenna Bush and her husband Henry.
