TISD Board gets update on graduation changes

Posted: Updated:

Tyler (KYTX) -- We're getting a better idea of how a state bill, now signed into law, will soon change high school graduation plans.

Tyler ISD board members focused solely today on HB5's impact on graduation, getting up to speed on what the State Board of Education is working out.

"They've given us a Foundations Program that requires specific amounts of science, math, and social studies," Christy Hanson, Tyler ISD Chief Academic Officer, said.

All students will graduate under the Foundations Program, but they have options to go beyond that.

"The endorsement is above and beyond. It will require some advanced math and some advanced science and 2 electives," Hanson said.

Board members say what it amounts to is students having more flexibility to take classes that suit their interests.

"Under the old system, it was very regulated by the state what courses and credits you have to have," Tyler ISD Superintendent Gary Mooring said.

In January, the State Board of Education finalizes the changes. That means most current seniors and juniors will keep the plan they're already on, but will have the option to switch over if they desire.

Tyler ISD plans to hold informational workshops in the future so parents, students, and staff can get fully informed on House Bill 5.
