Rotary clubs help collect books for international book project

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - Tyler area rotary clubs are doing their part to help out literacy internationally. Tyler Rotary, South Tyler Rotary and Sunrise Rotary have gotten involved with the International Books Project that will send books overseas to adults that may not have access to them.

Reaching deep into a barrel is how Mrs. Deann Sutton spent her Monday afternoon.

"When it gets down to the bottom, I'm short so it's kinda hard for me to get there," she said.

She's helping Tyler area rotary clubs collect books for the International Book Project. It's a national initiative to get books to adults overseas.

"The group's sole purpose is to get books into the hand of people that don't have them, something we all take for granted because we have books and kindles and Internet," said Nancy Crawford who is a Rotarian and the director of the Literacy Council of Tyler which focuses on adult literacy.

"We just want to be a part of anything that promotes reading," Crawford said.

For the past few weeks the Literacy council has set up donation barrels to help out the rotary club. The majority of the books will go overseas, but a few hundred will go toward east Texas literacy.

Crawford said this project is important because reading can change lives.

GED teacher Jim Schneider agrees.

"When I grew up I was told that books are my friends, and it's a lot of people out there who don't have friends," said Schneider.

He said he sees the benefits of reading everyday at work.

"When they walk away from here you can see the difference in just the way they walk and they way they address themselves, they have so much more confidence in themselves," he said.

So they hope, the stacks and stacks of books may help people miles away gain the confidence of learning to read or reading better.
