Hope Awards Ceremony honors fighters against domestic abuse

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - Several east Texans were awarded the "Hope Award" for their efforts in fighting domestic violence.

It's a positive day honoring people who've helped make the lives of domestic violence survivors easier.

"You get something told to you long enough you start believing it," said domestic violence survivor Cindy Bell.

She doesn't like talking about the horrors of her past, but was willing to do if for the Hope Awards ceremony.

"I was in an abusive relationship and found the East Texas Crisis Center when I didn't have anything at all.

About a dozen businesses, people and organizations were awarded for going above and beyond as volunteers in the fight against domestic violence. Stephanie Masters and her sorority sisters of Alpha Chi Omega were presented a hope award.

"It encourages the group to know we are doing this and we are making a difference," Masters said.

She said her sorority is focused on stopping domestic abuse, because the serious issue needs all the attention it can get.

The National Network to End Domestic Violence reports each day three women die because of domestic abuse. It's number also estimate 15.5 million children are exposed to domestic abuse.

"I just want women to know that they do not have to stay," said Bell.

She said it was ultimately her concern for her children that gave her the push she needed.

"I just didn't want my children to grow up to think it was okay to treat any women alike that and that was a big deciding factor to change my situation."
