BBB warns of phony online job offers targeting East Texans

Posted: Updated:

Tyler (KYTX) -- Most of us go to the Internet to hunt and apply for jobs, and predators are following.

One just targeted an East Texas woman by placing an ad on Craigslist.

"When she responded, they sent her a check and wanted her to cash part of it and send part of it back to them for processing fees and application fees," Mechele Mills, CEO of the East Texas Better Business Bureau, said.

That's your first red flag--a company demanding money before you are hired.

"A legitimate company or employment agency will not charge you to do a background check. That's the cost of doing business," Mills said.

It's harder to catch these types of scammers.

"Many times they are working from a wi-fi hot spot and they move from place to place to place so they are very hard to track down," Mills said.

Lee Jones is searching for part-time work right now and is careful online.

"I have trouble putting anything on paper, and so certainly my computer because it's out of my control once it's out there," Jones said.

He says he has gotten unsolicited emails in the past, but he deletes them.

"People that ask to send them money and then they will send me back money, that just doesn't compute with me. I live by if it's too good to be true, it is," Jones said.

Jones also doesn't post his resume online for anyone to see. Experts say that's a smart move, since so much personal information is on that one piece of paper.
