Record setting year for "Texans Against Crime"

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) -  Over the savory smell of barbecue and the sound of children playing a game of jump rope, the people who live in Greenwood Village in Tyler are getting to know each other a little better.

"Everybody in today's society is so busy and you finally get a chance. to at least for one day, get around to see everybody, and get to know everybody," said Andy Ginn.

The people in this neighborhood keep in constant contact, mainly through email, about the latest happenings in their neighborhood, whether it's good or bad.

"We're just blessed to have a great neighborhood here and friendly people that are always willing to look out for one another," said Ginn.

Texans Against Crime is an annual event that always takes place on the second Tuesday in October.

It's designed to encourage neighborhood communication, community involvement and crime prevention.

Shirley McInnis, who lives in the pollard community, had a chance to speak with officers about her concerns.

"It's so nice they're taking their time to do this, because I know they're busy," added McInnis.

Tyler Assistant Police Chief Jimmy Toler says the city's overall crime rate is down, but there has been an up tick in property crimes.

He says that's why it's important to have everyone looking out for each other.

"As these parties get bigger and bigger and people start to reach out and they start to watch each others houses, each others properties, it kind of helps build that community partnership," said Asst. Chief Toler.

A community partnership that can only grow, if everyone in every community across East Texas continue to work together.
