Health Alert: Airplanes increase risks for heart problems

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - The near-constant sound of loud airplanes puts older people at greater risk for heart problems, according to a Harvard study.

Researchers looked at data from 6 million elderly people with cardiovascular disease.

They found residents in neighborhoods near airports were admitted to the hospital for heart issues at a rate 3.5 percent higher than other zip codes.

Noise has been shown to cause stress reactions and increase blood pressure, which are risk factors for heart disease.

(CBS) - Researchers say they've discovered two genes that increase the risk of developing anorexia and bulimia.

The eating disorders run in families so scientists from the University of Iowa and University of Texas, studied two families with a total of 16 affected relatives.

Researchers hope identifying the genes will lead to better treatments.

(CBS) - Scientists in California say they've found a way to better differentiate teenagers with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, also known as ADHD.

They say the brain waves of teens who are unable to pay attention are very different than the brain waves of teens who are hyperactive or impulsive.

They say this is the first time doctors can clearly see subcategories within the ADHD diagnosis.
