Government Shutdown: Blame game continues

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON, D.C. (CBS) - It's day nine of the government shutdown.

The blame game continues and there is still no deal in sight. On Tuesday, President Obama and House Speaker John Boehner spoke by telephone, and then traded sharp rhetoric before news cameras. The President again called on Boehner to allow a vote for a bill without amendments on the house floor.

Speaker Boehner called on the President to negotiate over spending cuts before a vote on that bill, or a debt limit increase.

"We can't make extortion routine as part of our democracy. Democracy doesn't function this way," says President Obama.

The Treasury Department says it will run out of money to pay its bills on October 17th.   The International Monetary Fund issued a warning Tuesday. A U.S. default on its loans would push the country back into a recession and hurt the global economy.
