Meeting Saturday in Longview for people interested in foster care

Posted: Updated:

LONGVIEW (KYTX) - The number of kids in foster care is growing in Texas, and child advocates in East Texas say they need more foster parents.

According to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services in 2011, there were 31,092 children statewide in foster care, including nearly 18 hundred in East Texas.

One non-profit agency says those numbers have increased about 25 percent in two years. Foster parent Melva Jo Caldwell says she's moving from Dallas to a home she's building in Hallsville, to give foster teen girls in East Texas a place to stay.

"They really need a lot of foster parents in this area, and she even called here a while back and said, 'Is your home furnished yet?' She said, 'We really need you.'"

If you're interested in becoming a foster parent, an informational meeting will be held at 2 Saturday afternoon at Ryan's Family Restaurant in Longview.
