"Hug a Firefighter" program teaching fire safety

Posted: Updated:

A group of East Texas fire fighters is trying to teach kids how to make it through a house fire.

On Wednesday the fourth graders at Vista Academy learned about hugging fire fighters.

"Hug" stands for "hurry up and grab." That's important because a lot of children find firefighters dressed in all their gear just as scary as the fire itself.

"They tend to hide. They'll hide in clothes hampers. They hide under their bed," Hug the Firefighter Chair Jeanna Farmer said. "They will actually hide in closets which hinders our opportunity to save them."

The children had an opportunity to see how an actual rescue takes place and to touch the gear firefighters wear when they're on the scene.
