Gas prices continue to drop across East Texas

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) -   Ginny Wilborn travels to 14 East Texas counties a day, providing transportation for East Texans in rural areas, at a low cost.

"A lot of people are in a classification where they don't pay at all. So, every little bit counts that where we can keep our doors open and our buses on the road," said Wilborn.

The lower gas prices drop, the easier it is to keep these buses on the road.

According to AAA Texas, the average price of gas in Texas is $3.11. Last week it was $3.16, and this time last year, it was $3.54.

"I think it's great, but it makes me curious of why now?" asked Jaymes Cardwell.

Some analysts say the government shutdown may also be pushing down energy prices. A reduction in economic activity usually reduces demand for oil and other types of energy.

Doug Shupe, with AAA Texas, says there are other reasons, too.

"The reasons for these declines is we're seeing sufficient gas supplies in the market. There's a low demand for fuel because the summer driving season is over, and there's also a move to cheaper winter blend gasoline production," said Shupe.

Whatever the reason, people here in East Texas say the lower the prices go, the larger their wallets.

Some analysts say, barring any major hurricane or unexpected disruption to gasoline production and distribution, gas prices could continue to go down in the coming months.
