Smith County Judge Joel Baker announces his run for re-election

TYLER (KYTX) -

Smith County Judge Joel Baker has announced his run for re-election in November. He says his goal is to keep limited government alive in Smith County while planning for the future.

During his announcement the two-term county judge spoke out against the federal government and its shut-down, saying local government is more connected to the people.

"I promised to be a good steward of county funds and resources and we've done that," Baker said. "I promised to maintain low taxes and we've done that. In fact we have one of the lowest tax rates in the State of Texas."

Baker also played up his experience in dealing with the specifics of county politics.

"It really takes the ability to work together and understand you're not always in charge and really collaborate with people," he said. "I think we've reached that goal in many areas."

Baker also promised to continue his small government and no-debt approach to running the county.

He said transportation will be a major focus for his third term.

Certified public accountant John Furlow recently announced he is running for Smith County Judge. Baker took office in 2005.
