Salvation Army in need of donations for annual Thanksgiving meal

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) -Thanksgiving is more than a month away, but the Salvation Army in Tyler is already preparing it's menu for more than a thousand people.

Every year, the non-profit feeds East Texans, who would otherwise go hungry on Thanksgiving day.

Bernard Tolan with the Salvation Army of Tyler says 1,200 people received a free Thanksgiving meal last year.

He expects the same number this year, if not more.

"We want to be sure that someone has thought of them during that time of year," said Tolan.

The Salvation Army of Tyler serves more than 300 turkeys and 500 pounds of potatoes on Thanksgiving. As you can imagine, that's a grocery bill that adds up.

Just a few months ago, the Salvation Army in Tyler had to make cuts to it's lunch program because of a lack of funding.

"Thankfully, this community is amazing. The generosity is overwhelming," said Tolan.

But, with the help of East Texans, who gave from their hearts, that lunch program was restored.

The Salvation Army hopes that same generosity is considered, again. So, they can make sure everyone in our community is fed a warm meal this Thanksgiving.
