Shutdown deal possibly in striking distance

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - The Senate could vote today on a deal that would re-open the government and avert a U.S. default on its debts.

Senate leaders met throughout the day Monday. The reported deal would reopen and fund the government through January 15th and raise the debt ceiling through February 15th. It also calls for negotiations to cut the deficit and offset further cuts due to the automatic budget cuts known as the sequester.

Republicans would get a new income verification policy for Obamacare to prevent fraud.

"We're doing our best to make everybody happy but everyone knows we're not going to be able to do that," says Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

Any Senate deal must still be approved by the House. The U.S. will reach it's debt ceiling this Thursday.
