DPS issuing Election Identification Certificates (EICs)

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - After much controversy, the Texas Voter ID Law will stand. Anyone going to the polls this upcoming election will need proper identification to be able to vote.

If you don't have an ID, Texas Department of Public Safety troopers can get you set up with an Election Identification Certificate- or EIC.

"No matter where I go, whatever identification that is required, I pull out my license."

We caught Gigi Jones getting her license renewed at the DPS office. She says she'll be bringing it with her to the voting booth.

"I will be taking my drivers license to show that I am who I am."

But not everyone has one of these, which is why DPS Trooper Jean Dark is encouraging East Texans to get set up with an Election Identification Certificate- or EIC.

"Specifically designed for people who have no other identification as a means to go and vote." she says.

To qualify for an EIC, DPS asks you come to one of the mobile stations with

  • Proof of U.S. citizenship
  • Proof of identity
  • Valid voter registration card.

You must live in Texas and be at least 17 years and ten months old to vote.

"If you already have a drivers license or a Texas ID card," says Dark, "then you don't need this further, nor are you eligible to receive an EIC."

Trooper Dark says these EICs do not replace drivers licenses and Texas ID cards.

"It is important to note that this does have one purpose only. The EIC is only utilized- would only be utilized for voting purposes."

The first day of early voting in Texas is this Monday, October 21.

Acceptable forms to prove your identity at these stations include expired drivers licenses, birth certificates, social security cards, military records and more.

It doesn't cost anything to get an Election Identification Certificate.

Those registration locations include

  • The PATH office on Front Street.
  • The Tyler Public Library.
  • The Salvation Army on North Broadway in Tyler
  • The Cotton Belt building on West Front Street in Tyler.
  • The Tyler Metro Chamber of Commerce
