(KXAS) -- Grazing dairy goats are being used to help take care of an itchy problem in Austin.

A sustainable food group is using about a dozen goats to help clear poison ivy that grows near the city's farmer's market.

The plant, while pesky to humans, is actually good for the animals. Michael Hanan with the Sustainable Food Center said using goats instead of chemicals is also good for the farmers that set up shop in the area.

"We can't very well lead farmers and work with farmers to use sustainable growing techniques, then go around spraying RoundUp ourselves," Hanan said. "We're thinking outside the box to find creative solutions that are better for the environment."

Hanan said 12 of the goats can clear an acre of land in about three weeks.
