TxDOT Names Top Toll Violators

Posted: Updated:

AUSTIN (CBSDFW.COM) - The Texas Department of Transportation is continuing its efforts to collect millions of dollars in unpaid tolls from a group of thousands of habitual violators.

The next step in enforcement begins Thursday, when the department will share the names and cities of those violators with media members, and post their identities online.

Senate Bill 1792 granted TxDOT the power to publicly report the names of habitual toll violators.

Featured on the list will be the names and cities of toll violators, along with their number of unpaid tolls and the amount that each person owes, fees included.

TxDOT is targeting some 28,000 vehicle owners who have each amassed more than 100 unpaid tolls, totaling more than $27 million. The list even includes some offenders with thousands of toll violations.

Along with publishing the habitual violator list online, TxDOT also has the authority to ban certain vehicles from traveling on toll roads, with approval from the Texas Transportation Commission. Banned vehicles found on toll roads can be ticketed and impounded.

The department can also report habitual violators to county tax assessors and potentially block a driver from being able to renew their vehicle's registration. Anyone with unpaid tolls is urged to call the TxTag Customer Service Center weekdays between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. at 888-468-9824. A payment plan can be set up, if needed, and a negotiated settlement amount may even be offered to some drivers.
