Murder conviction for Tylerite affirmed

Posted: Updated:

(TYLER MORNING TELEGRPAH) - A Tyler man's 2012 murder conviction was upheld in an opinion by the 12th Court of Appeals Wednesday.

Justin Antwon Johnson, 23, will remain incarcerated in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice after the court affirmed his conviction and 33 year sentence he received in April of last year.

According to earlier reports, Johnson was found guilty of stabbing 62-year-old Willis Warfield to death as he played dominoes.

Johnson had told authorities he believed Warfield had shot at his mother's home the night before the stabbing.

During closing statements of his trial, Johnson's attorney Joshua Wintters said his client watched Warfield beat his mother and threaten to kill him and his mother.

Wintters said when Johnson went to confront Warfield about his threats, Warfield had cursed him.

Johnson will be eligible for parole in 15 years.
