Voter ID Law is implemented, still some controversy

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX ) - The time has come for people to get out and vote as long as they have an ID.

"It's faster than it's been the past," said Tyler voter Ron Allen.

He and his wife Ann have been voting for more than 50 years.

"To me it's a very simple process and with the automatic computerized voting machine it's very fast," said Mrs Allen.

The Voter ID Law makes voting easy for the Allens, but for others, getting to that point is a problem.

"Many people have to travel back and forth to DPS at least two times before they have what they need," said Longview NAACP President Branden Johnson.

"Birth certificates are one of the most difficult," Johnson said.

A birth certificate is one of the documents many people will need to get the voter id certificate offered for free by the DPS office.

At $22 for a birth certificate, it will cost you. Johnson said, the people more likely not to have birth certificates are older people born to mid-wives or even people that may have lost documents during disasters like Hurricane Katrina.

"We consider it voter suppression," Johnson said referring to the Voter ID Law.

Both Johnson and Mr. and Mrs. Allen agree, having and ID eases the voting process.

"Why are people making such a fuss about it," Mr. Allen said.

However, Johnson asks, if voters can't afford or get what they need to vote, what point will an easy system serve.
