Tyler dentist buying back Halloween candy

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - It wouldn't be Halloween without lots of candy. But, dentists and orthodontists say those sweets can cause serious problems for your children's teeth.

"Just make sure that after you eat all that candy for Halloween that you throw it away! Or, bring it back here and we'll buy it back buy the pound."

Dr. Culberson Boren wants your children's Halloween candy.

"A lot of people are trying to get guns off the street," he says. "We're trying to get candy off the street."

He says he'll give kids $1 for every pound of candy they bring in after Halloween.

"We've been fighting cavities here for, probably 30 years now. So, usually when I see parents, I tell them, let their kids eat candy four times per year- Christmas, Easter, Halloween and Valentine's."

He says allowing kids to keep candy in their room year round is not a good idea.

"They get into it at probably the most inappropriate times, which is bedtime, where the candy will stick on their teeth or stay in their teeth a long period of time, which helps the little candy goblins eat away at their teeth."

Mother Vernessea Adams says she'll be keeping the Halloween candy to a minimum with her 5-year-old daughter, Jazzlyn.

"She loves candy, but I try to limit her candy just so she doesn't run around the house and get cavities, of course."

Dr. Boren says certain candies are more dangerous than others.

"The stickier the candy, the worse it is for your teeth or braces, whatever you have."

And, he says hard candies can also do serious damage.

"They tend to chip your teeth. And, crack down on it real hard the wrong way, and you're off to see me."

He says help your kids maintain healthy smiles, and you can avoid that trip.

"One more thing- open real big. Bite your teeth. Let me make sure your lips are ok for kissing mama..."

Dr. Boren says he will be collecting Halloween candy starting the day after Halloween.

He's going to give people about a week to bring it by his office- Dentistry for Children on South Broadway in Tyler.

You do not have to be one of his patients to take part in this buy-back program.
