TAP Literacy calls on others to help build child, adult literacy

TYLER (KYTX) - There is a new push to improve literacy in east Texas. Friday, the new initiative, "TAP for Literacy" was launched. A group of people were welcomed out to the Tyler Public Library for the big reveal.

The initiative will include several partnerships with literacy organizations all throughout Tyler.

Reading is something a few Caldwell Elementary students have been doing a lot of .

Hector Cepada read from one of his favorite book series. "Lets check it out said Annie, she and jack walked up the little hill," he read.

"Well  like superheros books," said Javian Harper.

Zaniah Johnson said, " I like to read books to make you smarter."

Over the past year, they've been working hard to improve those reading skills.

"It  was kinda hard at first," said Victoria Arteaga.

Those kids are just a few of the students who have worked with the TAP (Tyler Area Partners for Literacy).

"Education and literacy are so tied together," said Exec. Director for Tyler Area Business Education Council Christie Khalaf.

TAP for Literacy is a coalition of community partners advocating, promoting and supporting initiatives aimed at improving literacy for all residents in the greater Tyler area.

TAP helps children and adults, just like Amber Adair

She's a graduate of the Tyler Literacy Council reading program. It's one of the TAP partners.

Adair said, "It's  hard, but it's worth it, it's 100 percent worth it."

TAP representatives said the need to improve literacy is a major priority. Statistics show nearly two out of three fourth graders read below the level needed to do their work.

"In order for our community to continue to flourish... we've got to   have a literate workforce," said Khalaf.

As for adults, in Texas nearly four million need basic education services.

Maria Smith is also a Tyler Literacy Council Program Graduate.

"Without them, I don't think I could do it, so they helped me a  lot," Smith said.

She and Adair said, TAP Literacy is a great step in the right direction.
