Deer hunting big business in Texas

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - Regular deer season opens statewide next weekend. Outdoor writer Steve Knight with our news partner the Tyler Morning Telegraph says this time of year is big business for Texas.

"We have about one million hunters in the state of Texas." he says. "600,000 of those will be deer hunting in the next couple of months. During that time, they're going to take about 600,000 whitetail deer, bring them home for their freezer, antlers for the wall, stuff like that."

"And, it's a very important time of year, not only because of the recreational aspect for hunters, it's also important because deer hunting in Texas is about a $1.8 to $2 billion industry that helps employ about 25,000 people around the state, working at convenience stores, grocery stores, feed stores, tax offices, you name it. They're all involved in it. So, deer hunting is a very important time of the year in Texas."
