Legionnaires' Disease in Central Texas

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- A patient of the Waco VA Medical Center continues to recover tonight after contracting Legionnaires' disease.

The disease was diagnosed last Tuesday, by staff of the Central Texas Veterans Health Care system.

Staff have been testing patients who've show signs of fever, cough and other pneumonia-like symptoms, but so far no other cases of Legionnaires' disease have been confirmed.

The patient who became ill was a resident here and was staying in the long-term care facility.

He had a room to himself. Legionella bacteria was found in his room.

The man has been taken to the Temple VA where he is receiving treatment.

Back in Waco, a remediation process started Monday for the entire building where the patient lived.

The process will pump extra chlorination into the water supply to remove any other potential threats.
