Sessions to help East Texans navigate government web site

Posted: Updated:

Tyler (KYTX) -- Healthcare.gov is now back up and running after the system crashed yesterday, but some people are still in the dark about how to sign up.

Resources are becoming available in East Texas, namely the Andrews Center. Two navigators have been hired solely to help with outreach efforts and educating people in 5 counties how to sign up for new health insurance.

"To date, the information that we're getting has been sort of confusing for most people I work with," Juanita Brooks, who wants to sign up under the Affordable Care Act, said.

Brooks says she sees many seniors at her Tyler church Miles Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal, and she wants to help others like herself, sign up for new health insurance.

"I've decided to see if I can get an organization or a class or workshop something scheduled," Brooks said.

But when she's called around, she hasn't gotten answers to make that happen.

"This is kind of where I am now, this is why I'm reaching out. I want to get someone to come in and inform us, but also inform other people who also need this kind of information," Brooks said.

A recent survey by Bankrate.com finds about half of Americans don't know where to turn to for information on the Affordable Care Act. We did some digging to see where East Texans should go.

"Primarily, we're interested in being able to work with groups," Jim Hartung, Director of Contract Services for the Andrews Center, said.

The East Texas Behavioral Health Network, which includes the Andrews Center, received a federal grant to add staff that will explain the process to East Texans.

"They had 35 hours of training, and had to pass a test at the end of it to indicate their knowledge of this process," Hartung said.

Hartung says the navigators plan to be out in the community in two weeks to help people sign up for the Affordable Care Act.

You're asked to call the Andrews Center at 903-597-1351 to book an informational session.
