UPDATE:

PALESTINE (KYTX) -  Police are investigating a homicide after 81-year-old John Ferles was found dead at his home Monday night. It happened in the 100 block of Longhorn Drive in Palestine. Officers were called out to check on the man.

CBS 19's Katiera Winfrey spoke to neighbors who couldn't believe what happened.

At the corner of a long quiet street, sits a big gray house.

"It's a wonderful neighborhood."

That's why husband and wife Gene and Joyce Crawford were surprised to learn their neighbor was found dead in his bedroom.

"Last night we saw police down there flashing lights," said Mr. Crawford.

By the time police found the victim in this house he had been  missing for several days.  And in this quiet street his disappearance  wouldn't have gone un-noticed.

Mrs. Crawford said,  "It's quiet, everybody kinda watches out."

Meantime, the Ferles family is looking for answers.

"Go room to room turned the lights on and after I approached this room I noticed the sheets were gone and noticed the blood stained mattress," said the victim's step son Mike Ferles.

He's not sure who would have wanted to hurt his step dad.

The Crawford's say, Ferles was an all around good person. One that'll stop for a chat in the driveway or one to give a friendly wave.

"I can't imagine anyone wanting to hurt him," said Mr. Crawford.

Police believe someone did hurt Ferles, and they are working to find out who's responsible.

The victim's car had been missing, but police eventually found the vehicle in a wrecker yard about an hour outside of Palestine. They'll be checking it for evidence. In the meantime, Ferles body was sent to Tyler for autopsy.

Palestine Police:

Police have identified the victim as an 81 year old John Jerome Ferles of Palestine. Based on the evidence at the scene it is believed that Mr. Ferles' death was due to homicidal violence.

Police have also learned that the vehicle belonging to the victim has been recovered and is being stored at a wrecker facility in East Texas. Palestine Police will be traveling to the area to view the vehicle and try and identify any possible evidence in the case.

PALESTINE (KYTX) - On October 28, 2013 officers from the Palestine Police Department were dispatched to a residence in the 100 block of Longhorn Drive concerning the welfare of a resident there.

Police arrived on the scene and found the back door to the residence unsecure. Officers entered the residence to check on the welfare of the elderly resident and found a person deceased inside the residence.

During the initial stages of the investigation police spoke with the victim's neighbors and learned that the subject had not been seen in several days. It was also learned that the victim's car was missing from the residence.

Police are attempting to locate the victim's vehicle. The vehicle in question is a 2004 Chevy Impala with Texas license plate # 6ND-CJ. The car is gold or light brown in color.

The victim was pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace James Todd. The victim was transported to the Medical Examiner's Office in Tyler for an autopsy. The results of the autopsy will not be released for up to 60 days.

The police have talked with several people in the neighborhood. Officers are continuing to follow up several investigative leads at this time.
