Elderly man loses wheelchair to thief at local Wal-Mart

Posted: Updated:

SHREVEPORT, La. (KTBS) - An everyday trip to his local Wal-Mart, left one Shreveport senior without his wheelchair.

He says it was stolen in broad daylight last Thursday and four days later, he still can't go anywhere. Wright Walton, 78, tells KTBS 3 News he went into the Wal-Mart on Mansfield Road Thursday morning like he did hundreds of other times. He traded his wheels in for the store's motorized scooter with a basket but 15 minutes later, his wheelchair was gone.

"I went in there at 10:05 a.m. I went and got some medicine and then I went and picked up some milk and stuff. At 10:22 a.m. I checked back out and my wheelchair wasn't there" says Walton.

Walton depends on that chair to help him get around outside his home. The one he sits in Monday is a wheelchair he built with parts from other chairs.

"I took the wheels off the other one in the back and see how I had to tape it all up. It's good for the house but I wouldn't dare bring it inside a store" says Walton.

Walton says the wheelchair that was stolen from Wal-Mart would be worth about $400. He says security video caught the thief red-handed.

"A little kid was playing with it and his momma comes along and picked the wheelchair up and put it in a buggie and run out the front door" says Walton.

Walton searched the parking lot then called police.

"The report is in our system and the officers that investigate misdemeanor crimes for the Shreveport Police Department will be following up on this case" says Sgt. Bill Goodin with the Shreveport Police Department.

Walton fears even if the police find the person who stole his wheelchair, he will still have to pay to get another one and he says those things aren't cheap.

The Police Department says it does not work many stolen wheelchair cases but will do its best to find the person responsible for putting Walton out.

Anyone with information about this crime is urged to call Shreveport Crime Stoppers at 318-673-7373.
