Designs, location not settled for new Longview animal intake center

LONGVIEW (KYTX) - A meeting Tuesday night for public input on designing a new Longview animal shelter became a heated debate on where it will be built.

More than 50 people packed city council chambers Tuesday to see design plans for a new animal shelter.

The City of Longview and Gregg County have each pledged $2.5 million in operating reserves to build a shelter that replaces the humane society of northeast Texas shelter on enterprise street.

The Humane Society of Northeast Texas is offering to donate 4.3 acres it owns for the new shelter -- but another local nonprofit says that property doesn't provide enough space.

"Hopefully, that we can work in the process to be a no-kill. Then, we're open to grants and donors from all over the world," said Alicia Nolte, founder of Fete for Pets.

Architects hope to finish the designs in two months. The city council will have the final say on where the new animal shelter will be built.
