FDA wants to keep your pets safe

Posted: Updated:

(KYTX) - The Food and Drug Administration wants to keep your pets safe.

The goal is preventing any transmission of contaminants that could cause animals and people to become sick.

The FDA is proposing new regulations, requiring pet food manufacturing facilities, to follow better  practices to address issues like sanitation.

They will also have to have plans in place to correct any problems. Rebecca Southard is with Premier Veterinary Hospital.

She says it's important to be informed when it comes to your pet, especially after the jerky treats that caused deaths for some animals.

"A lot of jerky treats that we received complaints about are made in China, but honestly, a lot of comapnies use ingredients from China. And people don't have to put a lable where their ingredients came from," says Southard.

Southard says it's best to be informed by asking your veterinarian about your pet's specific needs.
