Crews prepare for possible flooding in Tyler

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - While we do need the rain, it's already causing traffic issues, and it could cause some flooding problems later in neighborhoods and on roads.

There are permanent signs at overpasses like this on locust street in Tyler because it's low and water will eventually flood the road.

While it's been ok so far today, the city dispatched crews early this morning to make sure many other streets would drain properly.

Slippery roads take the blame for traffic tie ups in Longview today, two vehicles ran into each other, and another ran off the road to avoid them on Loop 281.

Two people were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

As the rain continues to come down, city workers in Tyler are focusing on preventing flooding problems, clearing away anything that might cause a back up of water in creeks and ditches.

"It helps. Especially when it gets wet, trees tend to fall over, or branches. But, just seeing they're taking the time to come out here and clean it out, helps," says David Roberts.

David Roberts has lived on Don Street near Porter for 6 years.

He says the water runs off Don quickly.

"Have some occasionally on the streets," says Roberts.

The city is ensuring that run-off doesn't become a much larger problem after dark.

"Everything is still saturated, so we anticipate a lot of runoff. So doing everything possible to be prepared for that," says Robin Smart, the City of Tyler Street Operations Manager.

Smart says crews checked 250 smaller bridges and 97 major bridges today to prevent a water backup.

"Our main objective is safety of the citizens," says Smart.

But water could still wash onto roads in low lying areas.

And trees could come down too, like this one that blocked Wildwood Drive today.

Still the best advice when the rain hits later tonight...

"Just turn around, if water's on the streets, turn around," says Smart.

Or like Roberts says...

"Just stay inside the majority of the day. Don't have any plans with the rain," says Roberts.

Crews will be on stand by tonight, both in the office for the city to help with anything immediately, and at home in case there's a greater need to clear roads with the heavy rains.
