We live in the South, so some of us may have a Southern accent, but would you consider saying "goodbye" to "howdy, y'all"?
The Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee was going to offer a speech class for its workers next month to do just that, until it got canceled.

TYLER (KYTX) - The holidays are right around the corner. Those with Toys for Tots are asking people to start thinking about less fortunate families who need toys Christmas morning.

If you're in Longview, the boxes are going out this weekend, so you can start filling them up really soon. In Tyler, you can start dropping off toys the week of Thanksgiving.

This weekend though, mark your calendars if you live in Smith County and would like to register to receive toys. You'll have two weekends to be able to do that, and Toys for Tots coordinators are expecting a big turnout.

Smith County Toys for Tots coordinator Larry Adkins says he only has about a fifth of what he expects they'll need this year.

"I hope that we do not have one child in Smith County who goes without a toy."

Toys for Tots was started by the United States Marines. They've been making sure less-fortunate children have presents under the tree since 1947.

Adkins says no child should have to go without on Christmas Day.

"It breaks your heart to know that they don't have what you believe they should have."

Although much of the economy has improved, Adkins says there are still local families struggling to make ends meet everyday.

He expects to serve more than 4,000 children this year. That's about 700 more than last Christmas.

"The people who are hurting the worst are not getting better."

Which is why, he says, your donations are so important.

"The people of Smith County are probably some of the most generous and loving people in the world."

He says he knows he can count on community members to help fill the void in many homes this holiday season.

The deadline has passed to register to receive toys in Longview.

In Smith County, Saturday marks the first weekend to register.

You can visit the old Texas Guard Armory building on Commerce Street from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. this Friday and Saturday, November 1 and 2, and next Friday and Saturday, November 8 and 9.

You have to come in person. Make sure you bring a photo ID with you, a birth certificate of each child you'd like to register for toys, and proof of residency in Smith County. If you are the child's legal guardian, bring court documents to show that.

If you are receiving toys or benefits from another charitable organization, you are not eligible to register for Toys for Tots.
