Jonas Brothers on breakup: It's time

After cruising in the upper echelon of fame as the Jonas Brothers for the past several years, Kevin, Joe and Nick are ready to break away from the pack.

On "Good Morning America" Wednesday, the trio explained their decision to call it quits and bring the Jonas Brothers as a band to an end -- at least for now.

Nick, 21, confirmed that he was the one who started the conversation about disbanding right before they were scheduled to go on a 19-show national tour, which ended up being canceled.

"We're family first, and that's always been our main priority, and so honesty within that was really important," Nick said.

"So I came to the table with the guys before prepping to leave for the tour, and I poured my heart out to them. In a nutshell, I said, 'I feel like we've had some complications within the group for a long time without addressing them, and I think this train will fall off the tracks without really getting real about some of the concerns and some of the limitations that we may feel. It was a tough conversation, I'm not going to lie. It was a few days of working through it."

Their fans might need more than a few days to deal with the news, as Jonas supporters poured their own hearts out on Twitter:

The problem, chimed in Joe Jonas, 24, was that they couldn't seem to agree on their creative direction.

"It was just individual things that we were just butting heads about," Joe said, noting that the music had started to feel stale. "At some point we just decided that it was best to finish this and support each other in our own ventures along the way."

Kevin, 25, broke the news that their upcoming album will not be completed but they will release four of the unheard songs from the record.

"We feel that it's time the Jonas Brothers comes to an end," Kevin said. "But we will be doing something for our fans ... they've been with us for so many years, we didn't want to leave without giving them back something. We've also gone back in the studio and finished recording the live album from the last summer tour, and we'll be giving that to our fan club members, just from us."

All three New Jersey-born bros are looking ahead to new chapters in the entertainment industry, with both Joe and Nick exploring music and acting opportunities, and Kevin wanting to move behind the scenes to the business side.

As for whether they'll ever reunite, Nick said that it's "impossible to say forever with anything. I feel like we're playing it one step at a time right now and, like we said, rebuilding as brothers first and starting there."
