Federal Appeals Court Reinstates Texas Abortion Restrictions

Posted: Updated:

A federal appeals court reinstated most of Texas' controversial abortion restrictions on Thursday.

The decision came just three days after a federal judge declared the restrictions unconstitutional.

The decision made by a panel of judges at the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals means the law's admitting privileges requirement will remain in place.

The panel did leave in place a portion of District Judge Lee Yeakel's order that prevents the state from enforcing the FDA protocol for abortion-inducing drugs in cases where the woman is between 50 and 63 days into her pregnancy.

In a Statement, Planned Parenthood Federation of America said the admitting privileges requirement is expected to cause at least one-third of the state's licensed health centers that currently provide abortion to stop offering the service immediately.

Abortion services will no longer be available at numerous health centers across Texas, the those in Killeen and Waco.

"Planned Parenthood in Waco will have to temporarily stop providing abortion services for now, but again, we will continue to fight for women's access to safe, legal abortion in Waco and across the state," said Natalie Kelinske, Media Representative for Planned Parenthood of Central Texas.

However, Kelinske made it very clear that abortion services are the only services impacted.

She says family planning health services, including cancer screenings, birth control and STD testing and treatment, will still be made available for women at the health center in Waco.

Kelinske says Planned Parenthood has been in Waco for nearly 75 years and will continue to care for the community no matter what.
