Nine-Car Pileup on I-35 Near Troy One of Four Wrecks in Two Hours

Posted: Updated:

Four accidents in just a couple hours Sunday, and all within just a couple miles on Interstate 35.

The most serious was a nine-car pileup at the northbound Troy exit.

There were no major injuries in that wreck; just one person was taken to the hospital from those nine cars, and just minor injuries there.

The accident happened around 2:30 Sunday afternoon.

Drivers say as they came over the little hill right before northbound exit 308, they saw brake lights and didn't have time to stop.

The crash pushed cars under one another and even forced a couple onto the concrete hill on the right.

"We tried to get over to the right-hand lane, and as we did that the car in front of us basically went in front of us," said J.W. Sullivan, who was headed back home to Forth Worth, "and then we side-swiped them, and I think that's what happened behind us, too. So I mean, pretty much just a big chain of events."

"There's no escape," Kevin Schottlaender of Dallas, another driver in the wreck, said. "You're trapped with a center median -- there's no shoulder on that side. On [the right] side there's a high embankment, so people were trying to stay away from that, and so you were kind of in almost a tunnel effect."

There was already extra traffic on the northbound side because of earlier accidents.

Around 1 p.m., a woman swerved into the right lane just south of exit 311 and was hit by another car.

She went off the road and kept going into the ditch across the frontage road, where she hit a tree.

She was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The traffic from that wreck caused another a few hundred feet back. That one involved four cars.

A 12-year-old girl was taken to the hospital by her mother.

"With the construction zone and everything going on here, traffic is going to ... slowly speed up, slow down, speed up and slow down, and we just have drivers exercise caution and pay attention," said Trooper Carl Mitchell with the Department of Public Safety.

A short time later, a car blew a tire and crashed into the wall, also at the Troy exit.

Traffic backed up for miles both ways Sunday afternoon, but there were no major injuries through four different crashes.
