New traffic sign by Tyler high school to "ensure safety"

Posted: Updated:

Tyler (KYTX) -- There's a new traffic sign across from Robert E. Lee High in Tyler, you may not realize exists.

We watched as car after car ignored the "no left turn" sign onto Donnybrook.

"I knew the sign was right in front of me, but I didn't even see it because of natural habit. I want to turn left," Olivia Gonzalez, a driver leaving the school, said.

The City of Tyler put up the sign yesterday at the request of Tyler ISD.

"There were some possible close calls in the past, and as a result there was some discussion that had took place, and just felt like this would be in the best interest of everyone's safety," Dawn Parnell, a spokeswoman with Tyler ISD, said.

She explains the district noticed some hazards, especially since the new fence went up over the last couple of months.

"We do understand that it will take some time getting used to the new traffic flow, but we do hope it will prevent any potential hazards in the future," Parnell said.

The new sign means all cars will be diverted to the Shiloh and Donnybrook intersection. Some drivers say that isn't a solution.

"It's going to make it longer," Gonzalez said.

We received an email from someone who wanted to remain anonymous--telling us it took half an hour to clear the parking lot after school.

The sign is being enforced by Tyler Police, so if you choose to violate the new rule, you could receive a traffic citation.
