Brookshire Grocery Co. offering FRESH 15K; Promoting Health & Wellness

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - FRESH will be the starting point for a 15K run in March. It's an extension of a health and wellness initiative that started a few years ago at Brookshire Grocery Company and is picking up speed.

Brookshire's wanted to give back in a healthy way to the community. The greater mission behind the FRESH 15K is to help two local charities and promote exercise and nutrition in East Texas, like the company has been doing for employees.

"Before Trent encouraged us to do the rock and roll marathon in March of 2010, the most I had ever done was 2 or 3 miles," says Suzanne Vance, BGC employee.

Suzanne Vance is part of a group of about 250 Brookshire's employees who accepted a company challenge to run a half marathon.

"We don't just ask you to sign up and not help you to the finish line," says Trent Brookshire, a Sr. Vice President at Brookshire Grocery Company. "We have training runs together as a group. We have weekly newsletters that go out. We have captain and coaches that help people that have never done it."

Trent Brookshire, a Sr. Vice President at Brookshire Grocery Company is a runner himself with more than 10 half marathons under his belt. "The FRESH 15K started from an idea that our employees would run in races. We have paid for our employees to do 6 half marathons."

Vance lost 50 pounds while training for her half marathon and completes her 4th this month.
"It's changed my life. Everything is different. The benefits are there not only appearance wise which is the first thing people would think, but you also manage your stress better when you are in a routine of exercising," says Vance.

Vance intends to run her way across the FRESH 15K finish line March 1st, but never thought that was possible before Brookshire inspired her. "The greatest gift you can give someone is to believe in them and he was like y'all can do this. Let's do it," says Vance.

There's still time to train for the 9 mile run. It will also include a 5K and 1K for the kiddos. The FRESH 15K on March first will go through South Tyler. Brookshire's promises a world-class race with people and music to motivate you when your legs want to quit.
