Good News: Silver Surfers

Posted: Updated:

(KYTX) - Most of us picture angels as heavenly beings with two wings. But sometimes, they can pull up in your driveway in a colorful car on four wheels.

Heather Welda is considered a "visiting angel." She goes to homes across East Texas helping senior citizens with daily tasks, like cooking and cleaning.

But today, she's at Katie Lund's house for another reason. She's teaching Mrs. Lund how to use her iPhone.

"I do like to use my phone a lot. I'm learning to use a lot more features that it offers," said Katie Lund.

Mrs. Lund is the proud grandmother of some very adorable kids.

"We have a granddaughter that's 2 1/2 and we love to facetime with her," said Lund.

The best way for her to keep in touch with her grandkids is with this small piece of technology.

The silver surfers program is designed to keep seniors socially connected in this world of technology.

"We can teach seniors how to use facebook, to get daily updates on what's going on with their families," said Heather Welda.

Studies show seniors who surf the internet and embrace technology can reduce depression by 20 percent.

"Last night, we were laughing at some of our grandsons antics that our daughter had put on facebook."

It's a lesson Heather Welda doesn't mind teaching, because all of her students, like Mrs. Lund, learn a new skill they will use for a lifetime.
