UMHB Hosts Military Appreciation Day

Posted: Updated:

It was a special Saturday for soldiers and their families. University of Mary Hardin-Baylor hosted the annual Military Appreciation Day at Crusader Stadium.

The afternoon was filled with football, fun and hot dogs for soldiers like Sergeant First Class Chris Bridson.

"Knowing that we're getting recognized for Veteran's Weekend, but also just being here and having fun and being able to relax with our families," Bridson said.

Paula Tanner helped organize the big day and she says the event gets bigger and better every year.

About 1500 soldiers and their families came out to the game on Saturday for free.

"Well our military give to us every single day of the year and we are excited about having the opportunity to do just a little thing back for them," Tanner said.

The university has been hosting Military Appreciation Day for years, but this is the first time it has fallen so close to Veteran's Day, which is why they added special perks like wrist bands and free concessions.

Even though the soldiers appreciate the recognition and support, Sergeant First Class Bridson says their families deserve this special event just as much as they do.

"I mean, I've been in the Army eleven years...and my wife joined the Army with me....and not just my wife, my children too," Bridson said.

Today was also the final home game of the regular season for the Crusaders, but they've already clenched to go to the playoffs.
