Health Alert: Plaque deposits on brain tied to injuries

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - A small British study finds people who suffer a traumatic brain injury are more likely to have plaque deposits in their brains.

Those deposits can increase the risk of Alzheimer's Disease.

Researchers looked at 15 people who suffered head trauma. They say the plaque starts to appear just hours after the injury and is seen in patients of all ages.

(CBS) - A type of metal used in cell phones and computers may increase the risk of stroke.

A new study found people who have high levels of the metal called Tungsten in their bodies were nearly twice as likely to suffer a stroke.

Researchers say during the production process small amounts of the metal can make its way into the water supply leading to human exposure.

(CBS) - A new study finds male high school athletes are more likely than other kids to be prescribed Opiod painkillers.

For example, like Vicodin and Oxycontin, which they are also likely to abuse.

Researchers at the University of Michigan were surprised to find out the same does not hold true for female athletes.

Doctors say one reason why is boys who wrestle and play football are more prone to injury.
