TxDOT cold weather road maintenance

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - Those with the Texas Department of Transportation are preparing for freezing temperatures.

"Around this time, people are hunting, people are taking off, so this is a good way to make sure that our guys stay engaged, that our equipment is working properly because the wrong time to find out it doesn't work is when you need it."

TxDOT spokesman Larry Krantz says these hanging inserts will go in dump trucks and be filled with what's called 'grade 4 lightweight rock.' This pumice-like material will be spread out on slick roads in Wintry driving conditions.

"It's designed to crush when you drive over it. So, the more it gets driven on, the more it crushes and spreads in the wheel path. It gives tires something to bite into. It should reduce that skidding if you do have to slam on your breaks."

Noonday firefighter Michael Terjaskis knows how easily skidding can happen.

"Even in these big trucks, we can start sliding."

He says safe driving conditions mean everything to him.

"It's vital. I mean, if we don't get to a call, we aren't doing any good."

He's grateful for TxDOT's help, but knows safe driving is even more important.

"Bridges freezing over, you know, we can't control that. The one thing we can control is how fast we're going."

He says he wouldn't get called out to nearly as many car wrecks if other drivers would slow down too and keep a safe driving distance between other cars.
