(CNN) - The holiday travel season is almost here.  Your early gift: gas prices that could dip below $3 a gallon.  The average cost of a regular gallon of gas right now is $3.19.

CNN Money reports that is after a decrease of about a penny a day for the last week. It gets better in some parts of the country. According to the oil price information service, nearly 20% of gas stations nationwide are charging less than $3 a gallon for regular gas, why the low prices?
CNN Money reports that an increased supply cheaper than normal crude oil from Canada and North Dakotas are keeping prices low. The hurricane season this year has not been fierce, so refineries have been able to keep gas inventories high without much disruption. The average rate we're seeing is already below last year's low which never dipped below $3.21.

Forget Black Friday. Thanksgiving is the day to cash in on big deals at Wal-mart. This year's sale bonanza starts earlier than ever, at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving day. That's two hours sooner than last year. Wal-mart says its just trying to keep up with competitors who are also opening earlier this year.

The holidays may not be so merry and bright this year for retailers. Predictions from Morgan Stanley suggest sales growth during the fourth quarter is shaping up to be the weakest its been since 2008. Analysts say the culprit appears to be weak consumer confidence. Retailers are expected to roll out steep price reductions in response to attract more customers.

The world's two biggest smartphone makers are going head to head. This time in a Silicon Valley court room. Jurors will decide how much Samsung owes Apple for infringing on its patents. This current trial is a battle over older products that are no longer sold in the U.S.
In March, there will be another legal battle that will focus on newer products still on the market.
