Health Alert: Cardiologists recommend wider use of statins

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - Doctors want a lot more people to start taking cholesterol lowering drugs called statins.

The American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology have issued new guidelines which would change the formula for estimating who should take the drugs.

At least 33 million Americans would now meet the threshold to consider taking the drugs in order to prevent heart attacks and strokes.

(CBS) - Pancreatic cancer death rates among blacks and whites have moved in opposite directions over the past few decades.

Researchers at the American Cancer Society cannot explain an ongoing trend.

When one group shows an increase, the other group decreases.

Overall, deaths from pancreatic cancer are increasing.

Smoking, obesity and red meat have been linked to the disease.

(CBS) - Women who have weight-loss surgery have an increased risk of giving birth to premature and low weight babies.

That's according to Swedish researchers who studied 2,500 babies who were delivered by women who had weight-loss surgery.

The study found that more than 5 percent of those babies were small for their gestational age, and almost 10 percent were premature.
