Fathers, sons bond during annual fishing tournament

TYLER (KYTX) - East Texas father's and their sons got special bonding time Saturday during the fourth annual Father Son Fishing tournament put on by the Glass Recreation center held at Woldert Park.

CBS 19's Katiera Winfrey explains why the event was more than a typical trip to the lake.

There were several people sitting or standing on the edge of the water, watching the fish reel in.

"It's been going good, cause I caught three or four," said 11-year-old Lance Salter.

He's on a mission to win the smallest fish contest.

"I caught two zero ounce fish," he said.

The smaller fish were thrown back, however the bigger ones were just fine to keep. Lance was one of several boys, dads and grandads to participate in fishing tournament.

"I think fishing is something that keeps a lot of kids minds on nature instead of video games...it's just you against nature," said David Wilson who is a pro bass fisherman. He was called in to give fishing tips for the veteran fisherman as well as the novice ones.

"It's so you can get better acquainted," said Wilson who has several sons.

He said fishing with them strengthens their bond.

That's why Lance's father Larry  Salter makes fishing a family outing.   "It's  just fun, the boys like it," Salter said.
They've been participating in the tournament all four years of it's existence.

Salter said, " My youngest he loves fishing and my oldest one does too, he's coming around to it."

With the help of their fathers or grandfathers many of the new fishermen are getting the hand of casting a line.

"When is see the bobber go down and I have to reel it in," said Lance.

Other fishermen are getting the hang of holding on to a slippery catch.

Organizers said this event has been a big hit over the past few years for fathers and sons. However, after hearing from several dads, next year they'll extend the event to include fathers and daughters.
