East Texas native to become US Ambassador to Dominican Republic

Posted: Updated:

(KYTX) - An East Texas man has been appointed by President Obama to be the next ambassador to the Dominican Republic.

James "Wally" Brewster is a Lindale native and prominent Chicago business executive.

We spoke with Tyler woman Sarah Bryan about Brewster's appointment.  She met Wally Brewster when they were both students at Tyler Junior College in 1979.

"He went to Texas A&M and I went on to UT,  and so our choices in colleges are kind of opposite and our politics are pretty opposite. But, we still are great friends and we respect each other and I'm really happy for him," said Sarah Bryan.

Sarah still speaks with Brewster often and was happy when he told her the news of his nomination.

"He has a house in the Dominican Republic and has spent a lot of time down there. So, I was thrilled for him, because I knew it was one of his goals to do that," said Bryan.

Brewster has been one of President Obama's biggest backers. He helped raise more than half a million dollars for Obama's re-election campaign.

"He's very dedicated to the United States and I think he's going to do a great job down there. He'll do his best," added Bryan.

Illinois Senator Dick Durbin, told the Chicago Sun-Times, Brewster's relations with the Dominican Republic will help the country's ties with the United States.

"I think he'll be great. He's a hard worker, he's very dedicated. I think he'll do a great job," said Bryan.

Sarah says Wally Brewster may have ambassador in front of his name soon, but he will always be like a brother to her.

"Like I told him, I'm not calling him Ambassador Brewster and he still better take my phone call," laughed Bryan.

Sarah says she plans to be at Brewster's swearing-in ceremony, which will be held this Friday by Vice President Joe Biden in Washington, D.C.

Wally Brewster now lives in Chicago. He's the senior managing partner for SB&K Global, a marketing consulting firm in Chicago.

Brewster is an LGBT co-chair for the Democratic National Committee. He also serves on the board of the Human Rights Campaign.

Brewster was nominated for the Dominican Republic ambassador spot by President Obama back in June.
