Death toll rises from Midwest storms

Posted: Updated:

(CNN) - It's been 2 days since the massive storms hit the Midwest. Eight people have now been confirmed dead from Sunday's tornadoes.

Several tornadoes tore through Illinois. In the city of Washington, authorities say as many as 400 homes were destroyed or seriously damaged. One man stood just outside the door of his house and recorded video of a tornado that hit his town. Miraculously, the man who took the video survived.

Throughout the state, many are simply trying to process what was lost and what they still have.

"Unreal. Just terrifying. You just don't think that things like this will happen. All day I said it's just gonna rain, you know."

 "So, we're all healthy, we're alive. That's what's important."

Part of recovery efforts are  still a challenge. Over half a million people are still without power across the Midwest.
